Small Cell Networks

Presently, cellular network users are not only those which generate mostly downlink traffic (web browsing, downloading) but also combination of users generating symmetric (both uplink and downlink) traffic (social networking, video conferencing, gaming) and users generating uplink traffic (IoT traffic). In order to provide better connectivity and high data rates to these users, low power network nodes, called small cells, are being deployed in LTE networks. Examples of such small cells are micro cell, pico cell, relay, remote radio head (RRH) and femto cell. The challenges associated with the small cell deployment are cross-tier & co-tier interference, frequent handovers, inefficient radio resource allocation in dense small cell deployment scenarios, load balancing, and efficient placement and power control. In order to address these challenges, we have been working on the following solutions:

  • Optimal placement and dynamic power control of small cells in LTE HetNets in order to reduce co-tier and cross-tier interference
  • D2D based Relay UEs for improving SINR in LTE HetNets
  • Adoption of LTE Dual connectivity (DC) feature to connect indoor UEs to multiple small cells
  • Efficient radio resource allocation and interference management by employing eICIC, soft frequency reuse (SFR) and muting of subframes of small cells
  • Full duplex small cells and Phantom Cells
